When you open a door…


The opening of the Drake Passage between 50 and 20 million years ago was the final stage in the breakup of the Gondwana Supercontinent (i.e. when all the modern continents separated from each other). This separation between South America and Antarctica is considered as one of the most important geological events in the history of our planet. This opened a door for the transfer of water masses between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans in the southern hemisphere and allowed the establishment of the mighty ‘Antarctic Circumpolar Current’ around the Antarctic continent. This current is a critical component of the ocean conveyor belt, which is key in distributing the heat in our Planet. But, what were the consequences of this opening on regional and global climate?
